NS SEME OFFICIAL PARTNER
Evrosem grows seeds of the selection of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops NS Seme (Serbia, Novi Sad) and is its official partner in scientific activities.
The breeding achievements of this institution are well known not only at home and in Ukraine, but throughout the world for over 80 years, since this institute is one of the oldest in Europe, and was founded in 1938. Today NS Seme operates in more than 30 countries around the world, its breeding portfolio contains almost all the world’s major crops, from sunflower to alfalfa hybrids, from overwintering peas to one of the best non-GMO soybeans in Europe, and much more.
If we talk about sunflower, then one of the world’s first sunflower hybrids in 1978 was created by the specialists of the Institute, the first IMI hybrid in Europe was also created here, the first source of tolerance to Phomopsis was identified in the laboratories of the Institute, and today NS Seme hybrids are recognized as the most resistant to this disease. All European plant breeding companies have hybrids in common with the institute or buy genetic plasma from it. Nowadays the Institute has registered 402 own and 235 joint sunflower hybrids in the whole world, annually at least 3 million hectares worldwide are sown with genetics from Serbia.
The Institute does not stand aside in the fight against the main recognized enemy of sunflower today that is the parasite Orobanche Cumana (Sunflower broomrape). This plant parasite is the main threat to world sunflower production, which to some extent suppresses 50% of the world’s seeding of this crop. In June 2018, at the World Symposium (Bucharest, Romania) on this issue, almost all leading breeding institutions joined a scientific consortium, the main purpose of which was to identify and combat the broomrape races. The Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops plays a leading role in this union.
In Ukraine, NS Seme has a partnership program studying Orobanche Cumana with Evrosem. On 20th September, a memorandum on a joint study of new broomrape races in Ukraine was signed between Evrosem and the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops NS SEME.
