Growing pumpkins is easy

The Turka pumpkin is an early-maturing bush variety that is valued for its seeds, oil and taste. The plant is compact, with short vines, and produces 2–3 fruits weighing 4–6 kg with thin, firm skin that preserves the fruits well. The seeds are completely ready for sowing, calibrated and treated with fungicide and microelements.
Fertile, light and well-drained soils are selected for sowing. Field preparation includes autumn ploughing, spring harrowing and cultivation to form an even seedbed. Seeds are sown in warmed soil (+12 °C) to a depth of 4–6 cm; bush varieties are planted with a row spacing of 0.7 m and a density of 2.6–3 seeds per metre, climbing varieties – 1.4 m and up to 5 seeds.

Weed control is possible by mechanical and chemical means, and they are often used in combination. Mechanical treatment is carried out before sowing and several times during the growing season, and chemical treatment is carried out with soil and post-emergence herbicides to control annual and perennial grass and dicotyledonous weeds.

Fertilisation is carried out before sowing with complex NPK fertilisers and after emergence with nitrogen-containing and microfertilisers with boron, zinc and nitrogen. To protect against diseases, fungicides based on metalaxyl, mancozeb, triadimefon and copper hydroxide are used, and, if necessary, insecticides with imidacloprid or lambda-cyhalothrin.

The fruits are harvested after full ripening, when the skin is hard. The seeds are cleaned of pulp, washed, spread out in a thin layer and dried in the air in the shade or in a dryer at a temperature not exceeding 40–45 °C to a moisture content of 6–8%. Stirring during drying ensures uniformity, and maintaining moisture content guarantees the preservation of seed germination and quality.
